The Cuban Sandwich Show is planned for the entire month of June in Tampa, Florida, as an annual arts celebration with “Tampa and/or Cuban sandwiches” the subject of ALL the art, in ALL mediums.

The event is family-friendly and inclusive of all individuals (children, emerging artists, professionals, non-Tampa residents), organizations, venues and businesses to participate in a capacity of their choosing, be it one hour or the full month. The Artists and Writers Group intends this to become a cultural highlight of the summer season in Florida.

The purpose of the Cuban Sandwich Show is to introduce and draw new audiences to ALL corners of Tampa and its many unique neighborhoods. The month-long festival will provide destinations across the city with events both day and evening hours, encouraging exploration of Tampa.

Activities will range from single-night performances to month-long visual art exhibitions, with the majority of events free and open to the public.

Participating businesses, cultural centers, restaurants, galleries, museums and other venues will design and control their specific participation/event with guidance and marketing from the Artists and Writers Group at a level appropriate for each participant.

Local artists and performers will appear at 8 pm Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, in “Pink Friday – A Night With The Arts“, a fundraiser for Community Stepping Stones. The event will be at PLAY, Ybor, 1901 North 15th Street, Tampa, Florida.

The benefit, presented by the Tampa Bay Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, will feature Jeremy Gloff, DJ Pancakz, the piano stylings of Miss Sage, and many more. Tickets are $8 at the door and include drink specials and finger food.

The HCC-Ybor Festival of the Moving Image invites all FLORIDA filmmakers, both students and professionals, to send your titles for possible screening at the festival in March, plus be eligible for merit awards that total $2400 in cash awards.

**Please note that filmmakers from around the world are still welcome to submit films for consideration – however, in these special economic times, forgive us for being Florida-centric and supporting our neighbors.

Deadline: Postmarked by March 1, 2011
Notification: On or about March 7, 2011
Student Entry Fee: $20.00 (one to four films per filmmaker)
Independent Filmmaker Entry Fee: $30.00 (one to four films per filmmaker)

Encaustic Workshop January 22

The first of several Art Technique Workshops offered in 2011 by the Artists and Writers Group will be a one-day focus on encaustic painting Saturday, January 22.

Taught by Melissa Fair, the workshop will be noon to 4pm at Grown Man Studios, 6412 Central Avenue in Tampa, FL. The workshop is designed for all levels, beginner to experienced, and the fee is $125 which includes supplies.

Registration deadline is January 17, 2011. Space is limited to 15 students.

The annual Artists and Writers Group Yart Sale is Saturday, December 4, 2010, at Grown Man Films, 6412 Central Ave. in Tampa, Florida.

Yart is an opportunity to purchase high quality art at “yard sale” prices as selected local artists clear out their studios. Featured artists are Melissa Fair, Lori Ballard, Eliz Mitchell, Linda Alexander, David Audet and others with work ranging from artsy, funk, curios, to just plain “stuff”.

Tres Cuentos, One Cuba November 8

Tres Cuentos, One Cuba will be presented at 7:30 pm Monday, November 8, 2010, at Grown Man Brand Studios in Seminole Heights, Tampa, Florida. $5.00 donation includes good fresh coffee.

Tampa poet laureate James Tokley, Sr., photographer David Audet and Cuban composer and guitarist Alfredo Rivero will share their stories and contributions to the documentary film Tres Cuentos, One Cuba, directed by Fred Smith.

This event is part of the bi-annual Arte: Tampa Bay’s Festival of the Americas– a celebration of Caribbean and South American culture. www.artefestival.org.

Fred Smith wants to round out the work-in-progress with a live audience asking questions of James, David and Alfredo about Cuba and their project, with the intent of inserting some of the taped interviews into the final edit.

So join us for an evening with Tampa poet laureate James Tokley, Sr., reading several of his poems inspired by the (projected) black and white photographs of Cuba by David Audet, with live acoustic music by Cuban composer and guitarist Alfredo Rivero who created the soundtrack for Tres Cuentos, One Cuba.

Ybor Jazz Festival November 3-7

The inaugural Ybor Jazz Festival comes to the Ybor City campus of Hillsborough Community College November 3 through 7 with a eclectic range of jazz;  from small combo to big band, from blaring horns to acoustic guitars and violins, from bee-bop to Latin and from solo grand piano to the silky vocals of masters of the jazz “art song”.

Each day of the festival will feature two performances, the more informal Prelude in the cabaret style Studio Theatre and the Festival Concert upstairs in the Mainstage Theatre. Both rooms are in the HCC-Ybor Performing Arts Building at 2204 N. 15th Street Tampa, FL 33605.

St. Petersburg Times book editor,  Collete Bancroft, wrote an article praising Deep Carnivale as a “family-friendly festival” offering ” plenty of performances, games and activities for children all day Saturday”.

She was particularly enchanted with the appearance of Ybor City native son, Ferdie Pacheco, ”famed fight doctor, painter and raconteur”, who will read from his latest book, Tales From the 5th Street Gym: Ali, the Dundees, and Miami’s Golden Age of Boxing, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Homemade Music Symposium returns to Ybor City June 12-13 for its third year of celebrating and incubating the Tampa Bay area music community. The Artists and Writers Group is the organizer of the event.

This year the festival addresses topics including DIY Recording, Social Media, Electronic Press Kits, Booking Tours, Licensing, Record Labels and Promoters, Print Media, the Blog Network and more. Plus showcase concerts will feature more than thirty Tampa Bay area bands and musicians.

Join us for a great weekend of exploring the art, business, and culture of making music, and all that makes Tampa Bay a great area for music. All programs of the Homemade Music Symposium are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

The Festival of the Moving Image presents established filmmakers, newly emerging videographers, and performance artists in a multi-day festival.

The 2011 Festival of the Moving Image was March 23-27 in Ybor City, the historical district of Tampa.
